Reading Table

This reading table was designed to fit within its surroundings, and to have storage. To keep on theme being a reading table, I had veneered the top using a ‘book matched’ technique. This is when you open two leaves of veneer from the tree as if you were opening a book. Which leaves a mirrored grain detail. 

Roots

I took influences from the room, such as the maple ribbed feet on their sofa and the grey colour of their bookcases.  The client liked the idea of contrasting timbers, so the ribbed theme helped me subtlety break up the mass of colours.

Shape and Form

I wanted this table to look smart with clean lines, and not be intrusive to the room as well as making a statement. The table has four full length drawers for storage, when closed they blend in with the side rails of the table. I have used grey stained oak and maple timbers.

Materials

Oak / Maple

“The two leaves are held together with a traditional butterfly wedge, I have wedged this with grey oak leaving two maple parts to the wedge visible. This symbolizes the meaning  ‘ two become one’ –  the clients sat reading together.”
