Illuminating Bookcase

Commission, Bookcase

A very interesting commission from clients with a history of cabinetmaking in the family. It was an honour to be asked to make a bespoke commission, knowing that all details would be appreciated.

Roots

From first concept proposal to final piece, this project evolved three times. The final result is made up from soft flowing curves, and detailed veneer patterns.

Shape and Form

With the clients’ love of darker timbers and wanting a contemporary spin, I decided on cherry exterior veneer blending itself to surrounding furniture. For the inside, I chose maple, a paler timber great for reflecting light, and a soft, warm contrast enhancing the overall flow of curves. The achievement was to make something that looks effortlessly put together. The joint details add to this illusion.

Materials

Selecting the right material for a Howard Butler piece is an essential part of developing it’s character. Knowing not only how it will look aesthetically today but how it will age and strengthen over time. Each HB creation also comes with a guide on how to keep it fresh and last a lifetime.
